Public Polish medical service as a whole is still deemed as inefficient. Generally speaking first contact public medical doctors provide a fairly high standard of service. It is however not advisable to rely solely on public services while undergoing long- or even short-term treatment in a public hospital.

It is therefore necessary to consult private physicians. You can choose a doctor that will meet your expectations in terms of the quality of diagnosis and thoroughness of examination.

Finding someone with a decent knowledge of English, especially in the province might be a bit of a problem but English is the most popular of the foreign languages among Polish doctors. However, it some parts of the country, mainly in the West and in the region of Silesia, German seems to be dominant.

Although there are many private clinics and the scarcity of non-public hospitals, none of them offers comprehensive medical services. For these reasons it is essential to have access to an appropriate source of information on the quality and specifics of the packages offered by any of the private medical companies. In this way it is possible to patch the drawbacks of public hospitals and even provide a decent service to someone undergoing treatment in a public hospital.


A series of strikes conducted by nurses all over Poland at the end of 2000 showed that the reform of public healthcare system has not been yet fully accomplished leaving the question of financing the biggest issue to be tackled in the course of upcoming years.
