I) Public Transportation

1. Air travel – international

There is one international airport in Warsaw: Okêcie – Frederic Chopin Airport. This is where all of the international flights as well as domestic ones take off and touch down.

Where? The airport is situated within the municipal boundaries of Warsaw, south of the centre. It takes 15 minutes by car to get to the airport from the centre of the city provided there are no traffic jams on the way. The same distance can be covered by public bus within 30 minutes.

Taxi. When taking taxis please make sure you travel with licensed companies in order to avoid being cheated or overcharged. The best quality service is offered by 919 (= phone number available all over Poland) characteristic of white cabs. Be suspicious of helpful gentlemen offering taxi services at the airport as well as at the railway stations.

Bus. Regular bus lines 188 from Metro ‘Politechnika’ and 175 from Al. Jerozolimskie – DW. Centralny operate all-week from 4.50 a.m. to 11.10 p.m.; scheduled services run every 10-15 minutes and every 8 minutes in peak hours. Bus tickets are available in the Ruch kiosks and other news agents. Note that you need an additional ticket for every bigger piece of your luggage. Beware of pickpockets.

From outside the city As the Warsaw’s main railway station (Warszawa Centralna) is located in the very centre it is relatively well connected with the airport.. Another convenient way to get to the airport directly from the province is by Polski Express - a bus company that offers regular bus connections to some 30 Polish cities and has its stops right in front of the Departure/Arrival Hall at Terminal I of the airport.

2. Air travel – domestic and the train network

Polish Airlines (LOT) offer domestic services to biggest Polish cities: Bydgoszcz, Gdansk, Katowice, Koszalin, Krakow, Lodz, Poznan, Szczecin and Zielona Gora. The aim of the airlines is to attract as many customers flying from domestic airports as possible. Hence the promotion policy which offers the same prices for passengers having valid tickets for international destinations from Warsaw as well as for those destined for abroad but flying form any of the domestic airports. In other words the ticket form Gdansk to Paris via Warsaw costs the same as the ticket form Warsaw to Paris.

Generally speaking the domestic air transport offers the fastest possible way of communication between major Polish cities. One should however take into account that it is sometimes more efficient to take an InterCity train from Warszawa to Poznan or Krakow instead on embarking of a flight. Given the fact that that the airports are located in the outskirts of the cities whereas railway stations are placed in the centres one does not need to take extra time in order to arrive at final destination.

Although taken as whole enterprise Polish Railways (PKP) are deemed as inefficient their InterCity services are of comparatively high standard. The most efficient IC connections are: Warszawa-Krakow, Warszawa-Katowice and Warszawa-Poznan.

In the centre of Warszawa placed between Matriott Hotel and Palace of Culture and Science (PKiN) – the tallest building in the city, there is the main railway station (Warszawa Centralna) form which one can find connections to all of the corners of Poland.

3. Public transportation in Warsaw

The city’s public transportation consists of metro (underground), busses and trams.

Metro runs daily starting 4.50 a.m. until 11.30 p.m. The whole system is brand new and comprises only one line being still under construction. So far the underground links the centre of the city with the southern suburbs. The city faces nowadays pressing need for further lines that would connect both parts of Warsaw divided by the Wis³a river. This, however, cannot be accomplished due to the lack of funds.

Busses. Busses with red number patterns of 5xx and 4xx are so called fast routes connecting the suburbs with the centre of the city. Ordinary lines are marked with black patterns: 1xx, 2xx and 3xx. Night busses (6xx) service from 10.45 p.m. until 4.45 a.m.. Another two patterns of 7xx and 8xx connect Warsaw with its distant suburbs and towns within embrace of the municipal agglomeration.

Bus schedules can be found online as well as through WAP services – http://wap.wapster.pl/

Trams. Most of the Warsaw tram lines cover the same routes as bus lines. Sometimes (especially in the centre) it advisable to take a tram instead of a bus because of notorious traffic jams.

There is a variety of tickets ranging from individual ones to daily, weekly monthly and quarterly ones which allow to switch between various means of transportation. Individual as well as daily tickets are available at any newsagent or bus/tram driver. It is a little bit harder to purchase monthly tickets available chiefly at the turn of each month, especially on underground stations

Note: It is a common practice in Poland to make free sitting space for the elderly on every means of public transport.
