Medical Care

Specific risks

Nothing special compared to usual big cities

  • Large thermo and barometric amplitudes cause asthma
  • Polution caused by traffic causes ORL infections
  • Tap water is not recommended
  • Pedestrian traumatology (ice in the streets, drivers)
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Moscow by night and some places where consumption of alcohol is high (nightclub, bars,…).

Medical care

4 types of medical centers :

1. State medical centers include polyclinic, hospitals : terrible situation. Avoid it.

2. Private medical centers incorporated to previous institutions or autonomous : from middle to good quality of services but difficult to find out.

3. Government institutions : good quality of services but not available to everybody

4. Clinics offering consultations and a diagnostic on a Western basis with foreign doctors. They can be compared to "Western family practice clinics" : family care, dental care, biology, radiology, available drugs. Expensive costs.

Some addresses :

  • European Medical Center : 2nd Tverskoy-Yamskoy Pereoulok, 10. Tel. 251 6099
  • American Medical Center 2nd Tverskoy-Yamskoy Pereoulok, 10. Tel 956 3366
  • International Medical Center : Grokhovsky Pereoulok, 31. 10th floor. Tel. 280 7138

Emergency services

Call 03.

It is badly equipped and response time is long.

Some private companies develop this sector but deadlines are still long and intervention of primary care (car crash,…) is nonexistant.

24/24 emergency service

House calls, consultations in the centers : ask regular visitors of a clinic.

Medicines

Most of the western medicines are on the spot or it is possible to order them in the big pharmacies or in the clinics themselves.

Eczacibasi : Ulitsa Maroseika, 2/15. Tel 928 9189. Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 7.30pm. Roubles and credit cards accepted. Metro Kitai-Gorod.

The Medicine Man : Ulitsa Cheniaskovo, 4. Tel 155 7080. Log-established pharmacy popular with expats.

Vaccinations

Diphthery, Tetnos, Polio, Hepatites A and B, flu shorts on an annual basis, tuberculosis, encephalitis and treatment to fight ticks

Medical Insurance

Foreigners are not covered by the voluntary medical insurance which anyway is useless

Some Russian private medical centers, as well as Western clinics, provide individual, annual membership.

Some Russian insurance companies give access to voluntary medical insurance whose services are provided by different medical centers.

Summary

For family doctors : medical centers are good.

For serious medical cases : you absolutely need an insurance coverage to get access to private or VIP hospitals, evacuation, rapatriation, and maybe a good medical/surgery insurance to cover large medical costs.
