![]() The capital of Belgium is a pleasant harmony of old and new, bustling thoroughfares and peaceful squares, in Brussels you can find busy shopping centres that spread up and down as well as along, and quaint "villages" that have kept their character amid the suburban apartment blocks. Brussels must surely be one of the most verdant capitals. Brussels contains 10 % of the total population of Belgium (approximately 1Mio people), about 15 % of which is Dutch-speaking and there are 26 % foreigners (46 % EU). 61 % of the Belgians are house owners: "Een Belg word met een baksteen in de maag geboren" (A Belgian is born with a stone in his stomach) a) The communes of Brussels (Bruxelles Capitales): All the 19 communes of the capital are bilingual, French/Flemish; this means that any official paperwork can be done in both languages. b) The surrounding communes: They are situated in Flemish Brabant and are therefore unilingual Flemish. Exception: 6 communes have a special regime, "Communes à facilité" , which allows residents to do the administration in French: Wemmel, Kraainem, Wezembeek-Oppem,hode-Saint-Genèse, Linkebeek, Drogenbos c) Traffic: All the highways leading to the city (E 40 from Ghent, the west; E 19 from Antwerp, the north; E 411 from Namur, the east; E 19 from Nivelles, the south) tend to be congested during rush hours (7.15 - 9.15 o'clock), several kilometers before hitting the Ring road. Unique: All the highways are illuminated by night, it is not only for aircraft passengers remarquable but also for astronauts. |
