Domestic help is a common thing in China.
There is an official organism which is called FESCO. It is the oldest
and biggest state machine for house staff for foreigners, such as maid,
cook and driver.
Foreigners who want home staff, even for a short period, must go through
a government approved Labor Organization.

1 - FESCO (Foreign Enterprise Service Corporation) can provide
all kind of home personnel baby-sitter, a driver or an ayi -- even for
a short period -- to foreigners. Proceeding through FESCO or equivalent
agency is compulsory for foreigners and their family working for a foreign
representative office.

2 - For foreigners working for a foreign-invested company or
a Joint-venture, the BFISC can provide the service. BFISC is a very
young state-organization that seems more adaptable and dynamic than
FESCO.
3 - Diplomats and their families who want personnel must go
through the Diplomatic Service Bureau (DSB)
But most of the time, in your campound you will be proposed a AYI (maid).
