Shopping

In China, all the supermarkets, little shopkeeper, open markets, department stores are open everyday.

Grocery shopping in Beijing

There are several ways to shop for food:

  • Supermarkets:

You can find several supermarkets such as the famous french one Carrefour, but also an American one: Price Smart (you can get a member card and get discount). Jing Ke Long Supermarket where it is very cheap, and where you can find food, house furnitures.Gourmet Downunder, you can find a lot of foreign products such as wines, import meat, fresh dairy produce, imprted cheeses and many more. Jenny Lou’s Shop where you can find all necessary grocery products that foreigners like, fresh Basil and clean vegetable and a limited selection of The Green House's products are also available. You will also find in some hotel or in your campound some mini-markets.

  • Markets

In every district you will find an open market where you can by fresh vegetables and fruits.

  • Little shopkeepers

You can find at every corner of any street. They are very helpful when you do not want to go to the supermarket. You cannot find all the products you are used to, but they have milk, bread and many other things. They open until 10:00 pm, sometimes even later.


Depatment and chain stores

Beijing is full of department stores. It is a very convenient place to shop, because they have every thing. From food, house furnitures to clothes.

Here is a list of the department stores. You will find approximatively the same things in each one.

CVIK / Yaohan : 5th floor department store, where you find everyting from cosmetics to food.

Friendship Store : good place to buy chinese memories, also good cashemere.

Guiyou Shopping Mansion : big chinese department store.

China World Center : It is a big complex of appartments, hotel, offices, supermarket and many differents shops such as clothes, shoes, restaurants, airlines offices…

Landao (Blue Island) Department Store : another big Chinese department store where you can find Chinese memories, a pharmacy, material such as good cashmere material, household electric appliance, no grocery shop.

Lufthansa Shopping Center : also a big complex with everything you need for the house, good wool and silk carpet….

Also IKEA just opened.

  • NEWSPAPERS

In China there is one Chinese newspaper written in English:

The China daily: it is the only Chinese newspaper in English which informations regarding events in the wolrd or in China.

Chinese Hong-Kong newspapers which are more complete such as South China Morning Post ( a daily newspaper)

and Asian Wall Street, a Singaporienne newspaper (also daily newspaper).

  • FOREIGN NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES

Some English and French newspapers and magazines are available in Hotels or some department store.

  • MAGAZINES

A lot of free magazines containing all the cultural events in Beijing (or other big cities), addresses of restaurants, bars, theatre, and different articles are written regarding life in China, are available in all public places. And also different magazines regarding the economy and investment are published.

Arriving in China can seem difficult because of the language. Most of Chinese people do not speak English. That is why it is important to take some chinese lessons at the beginning to be able to get around without any problem.

There are a lot of schools where appropriates teatchers will make you learn the basic Chinese language you need.

  • CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS FOR EXPATRIATES

Every nationality has an organization or a club. The best way to have information about these clubs is to ask your Embassy. Many Embassy publish a monthly guide. In these guide you will be able to find the events of your community, but also the churches, the schools, and the social groups in existence.

For example, the French Embassy publishes a monthly guide called "Le Piaf". It contains all the informations regarding the video club, the UFE ( UNION OF THE FRENCH ABROAD)….Also in Beijing there is a special association for the expatriates wifes.

  • CHURCHES WITH SERVICES IN ENGLISH

There is a church in Beiijing called CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS. The service is in English every Sunday from 10:00 pm to 11:30 pm. They also do weekly service in members homes. In some compound you will have a Sunday office.
