A. Air Travel - National and International

There is one airport in Beijing: Beijing Capital Airport. All international and domectic flights go from there.

Beijing Capital Airport

The Airport is situated at 17 km from the center of Beijing.

  • By Car: Take the Capital Airport Express Way. ( Shoudu Guoji Jichang Gaosu Lu)
  • By Bus: Departure from Qanmen and AEA (hospital) every 30 minutes from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.


Also Many hotel proposed a pick-up and a transport by special bus to the airport.

B. The Train Network (Beijing Railway Station- Beijing Huoche Zhan)

China is a very big country and it can take long to go from North to South (24hours from Beijing to Guilin). There are few express trains and most of time they serve short distances. There no need to stamp the train ticket.

When you buy your ticket train, you can choose between 4 classes:

  • Soft Bed ( compartment of 4 beds)
  • Hard Bed
  • Soft Seat
  • Hard Seat


There are four main stations which cover the whole of China:

BEIJING STATION ( Beijing Huoche Zhan): Main Cities Served : Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou,Dalian, Yantai, Chengchun, uhehaote, Fuzhou, Wulanbatuo, Taiyuan, Qindao, Hefei, Baotou, Sijiazhuang, Yingchuan, Moscow.

NORTH STATION ( Xizhimen Huoche Zhan): Main Cities Served : Hailar, Kangzhuang, Chifeng, Tongliao, Huhuhaote, Luanping, Nankou, Changping.

SOUTH STATION ( Yong Ding Men Huoche Zhan): Main Cities Served : Changchun, Jiamusi, Tangshan, Qinghuangdao.

WEST STATION (Beijing Xizhan): Main Cities Served : Changsha, Nanning, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Xian, Wuchang, Xian, Qunming, Nanchang, Lanzhou, Xining, Zhenzhou, Luoyang, Taiyuan.

C. Beijing Public Transport

Beijing public transport consists of the buses, the underground and the taxis. There are a large number of buses and the metro just serve the a small part of the town. The taxis are the transport system the more used because they are very cheap.

The buses run from 5:30 am to 10:00 pm and then you have night buses which run from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am. They are numbered from 1 to 304. Bus stop are identified by small round signs painted in white and red, marked at the top with the route numbers of the buses that stop there.

The taxis as we said before are the main transport. There is a range of taxi fair which starts from 1.20 yuans to 2.00 yuans. Whenever you need a taxi, you will be able to find it in the street by just helling it.

Driving your own car

  • Driver's Licence

Foreigners cannot drive without a chinese driving-licence

International driving-licence is not recognized in China

For the foreigners who have the driver’s licence of their own country : they should change a chinese driver’s licence.

The procedures are as follows:

Go to the Foreign Affairs’Section of the Vehicle’s Administrative office of the Administrative Bureau of Public Security and Traffic. Bring your

  • residence card
  • the black licence-plate
  • and the driving licence of your own country.


Ask for a blank form in this Foreign Affairs’ Section and have a physical examination.

Go back to the Foreign Affairs’ Section to finish the formalities.

  • Bringing a car to China

Bringing your car to China may be not the best idea. It is very hard and can take very long.

To bring your own car, you need to get the Import Licence, and as it is a personal good, the only way to get the Import Licence is to go to a Car purchase office. These people are the only in China who can get Import Licence for induvidual car. But it is still not sure you will get it.

Representative office have the right to import cars. But it is limited at two or three. In the case the procedure is to go to the Customs Office and ask for filling an Import Paper, one you filled this paper, ask for filling the Import Licence.

You will have to prove your residence in China, so bring passeport, residence card, driving licence and work permit.

  • Buying a new car in China

Formalities for buying imported new cars and getting car number plate

1. Documents Needed

The car dealer will need :

  • your passport
  • identity card or residence certificate
    cheque or cash.
  • If you buy cars for your company they also need the business certificate of your company.

Then, you will have to go through all kinds of formalities :

2. Go to the Automobile Administration of Beijing Public Security Bureau with your :

  • receipt,
  • customs certificate
  • your identity card for checking purchase formalities


3. Go to Automobile Examination Center

with your foreign enterprise certificate and all certificate mentionned above for technical check-up.

4. Go to Beijing Bureau of Automobile Management and extras fees

Pay Automobile Purchase Tax

5. Go to the Foreign Affairs Section of the Automobile Administration of Beijing Public Security Bureau.

Bring all the documents necessary for getting the plate number for your car.

6. Go to the Automobile Administration of Beijing Public Security bureau

Bring all the documents required and the photos for your driving license.

7. Go to Beijing Bureau of Automobile Management and extras fees

Set up your car file

8. Go to Road Toll Office to pay the Road Toll.

This office has several branches in Beijing, each of which has diverse activities.
Most of foreigners go to the Dongcheng District branch.

9. Pay the car taxes

A. For Black plate cars (Individual. Foreigners) :
- Beijing Tax Bureau, Foreign Section

B. For Blue plate cars (Individuals)
- Chaoyang District Tax Bureau Advisory Office

C. For company cars, please go to Beijing Tax Bureau, foreign Section.


Formalities for buying new cars produced in China

1. Same as the formality 1 of imported new cars.

2. Go to Caihuying Automobile Market for certificates checking.

3. Go to Beijing Automobile Examination Center to pay your car with the above formalities and your individual certificates.
Go to the office in charge of the district where you bought your car.

4. Go to Traffic Team Department in your district to get car parking certificate (only for blue plates).
Price : RMB 200 - 1000. Cars with a black plate don’t have to to get this certificate.

5. Go to Car Examination Center.
Test your car, receive the licence plate, take photos, pay the first month’s road toll, and (valid within half a month )

6. Within 1/2 month after the last formalities, go to the Automobile Administration of Beijing Public Security and Communication Administration Bureau with your car photo to exchange the (temporary driving certificate) for a (driving certificate licence).

7. Go to Fangzhuang Bureau of Automobile Management and extras fees for setting up your car file.

8. Get a car insurance
Pay Basic Premium (RMB 500) + Amount Insured x Rate (1.85%).

  • Highway Code
  • Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants.
  • Children must wear seat belts and do not have to seat at the back. But in China, children will seat in their parents arms.
  • You have the right to turn right when the light is red.
  • Unless indicated, speed limits are as follows:
    - Highway: 110 kph
    - In the city: 70 kph
    - Other roads: 80 kph or 60 kph.
  • Car Documents

Have in your car all the papers and certifiacates you were given when you bought or import your car, all the time and also the certificate which prove you paid your taxes and the car insurance.

In China, except if you have an accident you should not be stopped by the Police.

  • Accident report

In China there is no accident report form. If you have an accident, do not move and wait for the Police. Once the Police arrives, she will take your and the other driver ‘s driving licence. Then you will have to go the next day to the Police Bureau for foreigners where you ill have to fill up many papers. Then you will have to report it to your Insurance company.
