China  Chinese utilities

Subscribing to all requiered utilities

You do not have to worry about utilities in China. Once you find the appartment, the landlord or the manager of the campound will take care of the utilities. Utilities are usally included in the rent, up to 300 USD, and if the bill is up to 300 USD, you will have to pay the difference.

The chinese telephone system

Two telecom operators in China : China Telecom (nationwide and most advanced network and services) and China Unicom (services available in some provinces only. Younger and restricted network).

Once again, you will not have to go the Chinese Telecom bureau to pay for your telephone bill. The landlord or the manager of the campound will take care of it. They will give you the bill and you will give them the money or will deduct this bills from the monthly house rental. The bill is to pay evry month.

  • Mobile Phones

Three main companies are on the market:

  • ERICSSON
  • MOTOROLA
  • NOKIA

You can buy your mobile phone in big department stores. You will have to get the SIM card that you can buy with China Telecom or China Unicom. The SIM card will connect all around China.

In the year two thousand, China should have his own mobile brand.


  • Internet

In China, there are plenty of Internet Service Providers (ISP) such as China-on-line, EastNet,

CENPOK Intercom Technology Ltd. They all propose differents packages per hours.

The official ISP in cooperation with Beijing Telecom through 128 K DDN is CINnet. Local access to Compuserve through Internet in China is possible.

Within China telephone costs are not very high, International are very high.


Television

In China, if your home is not cabled you can receive only 7 national channels which propose sometimes English program such as BTV 1, BTV 2, BTV 3, CCTV 1, 2, 3 and 4. With the cable you can receive more national channels. and

In all the buildings for expatriates, a satellite dish has been installed, which means you can receive foreigns channels such as CNN, HBO, Star World, Star Sport, CFI, TV5, CBS.

Here is a brief description of the channels:

  • CNN: News all day and differents programs about finance in Asia.
  • HBO: Eglish and American Movies.
  • Star World: Talk Shows, sitcoms, soap operas, documentary.
  • Star Sport: Sports all day.
  • CFI: French channel which alterns with TV5.
  • CBS: News.
  • TV / VCR: The Chinese System

In China, the TV / Video system used is PAL. NTSC can also be used by buying a convecteur or a multistandard TV / VCR. The French SECAM system will not work, actually it depends on the TV, and if it works you will see your video tapes in black and white.

VCR are not really used. The VCD machine is now more common in China is not very expensive. A lot of foreigners prefers to hyave a VCD machine than a Video because VCD are very cheap and easier to find than video movies.

However, it is more appropriate not to bring a TV not VCR in China. All expatriates appartments have TV and VCE or VCD.
