France  The French system

Education is free in State schools. French grade levels are named in decreasing order. Classes in French public education run like this :

- Ecole maternelle (preschool) 3-6 years old
- Ecole primaire (primary school) CP,CE1,CE2,CM1,CM2 6-10 years old
- Collège (secondary school/first cycle) 6e,5e,4e,3e 11-14 years old
- Lycée (second cycle)Seconde, Première, Terminale (Bac) 15-18 years old

National schools

Thy represent a specific nationality such as American, British, German, Italian, etc and aim to prepare the students for the higher education programmes of the home country. Often privately funded, they are an expensive option.

Bilingual schools

They are either private or exist as independent programmes at public French schools. Tuition is considerably lower than in the national schools. French curriculum is used and the majority of the course work is done in French. The second language (English, German, Spanish, etc) is taught for at least 6 hours a week. Children arriving with little or no French are placed into intensive French training classes until they can be integrated in the class. They tend to be selective and children are tested before being accepted. There is a big demand for these schools, therefore applications should be sent ahead of time.

International schools

They may be privately funded or may exist as special, private sections in French public schools in the Paris area and in most big cities. English is often the principal language. The curriculum is usually a mixture of several national curricula and students are mainly prepared for the international baccalauréat. We advise you to apply well in advance.

Vaccinations

In the schools in France, the following vaccinations are compulsory :
- tuberculosis (BCG)
- diphteria-tetanos-polio (DTP).
