Opening a Bank Account

Banking hours in Italy are from 8.30am to 1.30pm and from 3pm to 4pm,Monday to Friday.

Banks are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

To open any bank account you will need a Codice Fiscale, a valid document of identification and your Permesso di Soggiorno.

Banks offer various types of current accounts. Basically they differ as regards number of free transactions, cost of cheque-books and how often you receive statements. Current accounts may have fixed service charges that include a certain number of ordinary transactions, others require payment per type of transaction, enquire about conditions related to your account before setting one up.

Interest rates and service charges are often negotiable. It is always advisable to use banks recommended by your company. Corporate groups are granted lower service charges and better conditions. You will be asked to present an introduction from your company.

On opening your account you will be given your account number and bank details required for transactions. You can arrange payment of rent and utilities Domiciliazione.

Chequebooks

Chequebooks are generally not free of charge, there is a service charge for every written cheque. Personal cheques can be cashed where you have your account and occasionally in other branches of your bank. Cheques are accepted provided you have a valid identification document with you.

Credit Cards

Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and stores. All major cards such as American Express, Diner's Club, BankAmericard and the Italian access card to the Visa or Mastercard circuit CartaSi are widely accepted and may be obtained locally.

The annual cost of a credit card can vary from L.50.000 to more than L.200.000 for the exclusive "VIP" cards. Credit card holders are offered special free benefits, ranging from discounts in hotels and restaurants to insurance and assistance services.

In case of loss or theft of your card, after having cancelled your card you will be required to go to the Questura to file a report - denuncia of the lost card-carta smarrita or stolen card - carta rubata. You will need a copy of this report to apply for a new card.

You can apply for a Bancomat –cash card. Money used is drawn from your current account, apply for this card at your bank, it is normally posted to your address within two weeks. Bancomat cards can be used to withdraw money from automatic tellers all over the country. There is a monthly limit to the amount you can withdraw.

You are charged a minimum fee only if you use banks other than your own.

Most supermarkets, shops, petrol stations and restaurants accept Bancomat payments.
