The Italian System

Education is free in state owned schools. It is compulsory for children to go to school till the age of fourteen, the new school reforms will rise the age to sixteen. Private schools follow the same prescribed curriculum as public schools, with the exception of special schools like Montessori or Rudolf Stiener schools.

Pre-schools are obviously not compulsory, children can be sent to private or public Scuole Materne and Asili Nido, (kindergartens and nursery schools).

The Italian educational system is structured on the following levels:

Scuola Elementare (primary school) Age 6-10

Scuola Media (secondary school) Age 11-13

Scuola Superiore (high school) Age 14-18

At the Scuola Superiore level students can choose between:

  • Liceo Classico – classical curriculum including Old Greek and Latin courses
  • Liceo Scientifico – scientific curriculum
  • Liceo Linguistico – where the stress is on the study of at least three European languages.
  • Liceo Artistico – curriculum centred around the study of fine arts.
  • Istituto Technico – courses range from accounting, to agriculture and computer sciences.
  • Istituto Professionale –career oriented courses in the field of social services, tourism , hotel management, graphic arts etc.

Students are admitted to Universities after they have completed a five year course in a Scuola Superiore and have passed a state exam, the dreaded Maturità.
