Education is free in state owned schools. It is compulsory for children to go to school till the age of fourteen, the new school reforms will rise the age to sixteen. Private schools follow the same prescribed curriculum as public schools, with the exception of special schools like Montessori or Rudolf Stiener schools. Pre-schools are obviously not compulsory, children can be sent to private or public Scuole Materne and Asili Nido, (kindergartens and nursery schools). The Italian educational system is structured on the following levels: Scuola Elementare (primary school) Age 6-10 Scuola Media (secondary school) Age 11-13 Scuola Superiore (high school) Age 14-18 At the Scuola Superiore level students can choose between:
Students are admitted to Universities after they have completed a five year course in a Scuola Superiore and have passed a state exam, the dreaded Maturità. International Schools Schools classified under this heading teach their curriculum in languages other than Italian Most schools follow the Italian school year, beginning in September and ending in June. School opening dates vary from school to school. A list of schools and their respective addresses is given at the end of this section. English-Language Schools Schools offering English language curriculum are present in almost all major Italian cities. They are all independent, private schools. Some schools have classes from nursery school through high school, others only at the elementary or high school level. Fluency in English is required from students admitted to first grade and successive classes. American schools mostly follow the basic American curriculum up to secondary school level. High school is college preparatory and often offers both the International Baccalaureate programme as well as the Advanced Placement programme. The International Baccalaureate has been adopted by most schools since it is recognized worldwide. Some universities in the U.S. give a semester or a year credit to students who have a full I.B. diploma. Other English language schools either follow the normal British curriculum or a more international adaptation integrated with International Baccalaureate programmes. Education is provided from age 3 to 18-19. A child can enter first form at the age of five. British curriculum schools prepare students for GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and "A" (Advanced) level courses. Public exams from the U.K. are taken at the end of these courses. European School in Varese. The Board of Governors of the European School is composed of 15 Ministers responsible for national education of the European Community countries. It is free for children of EEC employees. The school has five language sections: English, French, German, Italian, and Dutch. The main curriculum is taught in the students mother tongue. First foreign language is taught at the primary level and two more at the secondary level. At Secondary level subjects like history and geography are taught in the first foreign language. Nursery school starts at age 4.Pimary school is five years starting at age 6.Secondary school is seven years and leads to the European Baccalaureate. The certificate awarded is recognized in all EEC member states and many other countries. National Language Schools These schools follow their national educational systems and teach in their own mother tongue. German schools: In Milan, Rome and Genoa. Children are taken in Kindergarten from age 3-5. A compulsory requirement for children whose mother tongue is not German is two years of kindergarten followed by a German language test before being admitted to grade one. Schooling is provided from age 6-18, at primary, secondary and high school levels. Students continuing studies in German Universities are prepared for their "Abitur", while those wishing to continue studies in Italy sit for an Esame Integrativo (integrative exam) and obtain the Italian Maturità. French schools: In Milan, Florence, Naples, Rome and Turin. "Ecole maternelle", Nursery schools, admit children from ages 3-6. "Ecole Primaire", Primary schools, age 6-10. "Collége", Secondary school , first cycle age 11-14. "Lycée", second cycle, age 15-18 Children are required to be fluent in French when admitted to primary school. Students are prepared for the French Baccalaurèat exam and special Italian exams that allow them to enter local universities. Swiss schools: In Milan, Ponte S.Pietro (Bergamo), Rome and Catania (Sicily). The schools in Bergamo and Catania have classes till the primary school level. Schools in Milan and Rome have nursery school to high school classes, ages 3-18. Language used is German. Both Swiss and Italian curriculum are followed. High school students in Rome are prepared for " Matura E", socio-economic certificate. While, students in Milan can sit for " Matura A" and "Matura B", linguistic and scientific high school certificates. Japanese schools: In Milan and Rome Schooling is provided for ages 6-14. Primary school " Shogakko" admits children at the age of six and continues till grade six. Middle school "Tyugakko", as in Japan , consists of three classes. Swedish schools: In Arese (Milan) and Corlo (Modena). Both schools have classes from grade one to grade six, ages 6-12. From grades seven to nine students can continue their schooling with computer aided self-studies aided by the local school teachers. Spanish school: The Liceo Cervantes in Rome is the only school in Italy that offers a Spanish curriculum. It offers education from ages 6-18. The elementary and secondary levels, 6-16, follow the prescribed compulsory education programmes. The following two years are University preparatory or "Bashillerato".
